“At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, and when societies around the world are trying to build digital-age economies, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering. Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing off-limits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and the innovative products that resulted. Driven by demons, Jobs could drive those around him to fury and despair. But his personality and products were interrelated, just as Apple’s hardware and software tended to be, as if part of an integrated system. His tale is instructive and cautionary, filled with lessons about innovation, character, leadership, and values.” The BookPal team works on Macs daily and we use Apple servers and iPhones so we are without doubt huge fans of the fruits of Job’s work over the last 30 years. Apple gadgets have made our work life easier, more fun and more efficient. The BookPal team was all saddened by his passing. Who knows what he could have done with 30 more years… Look for Steve Jobs biography in bulk starting October 24th on Book-Pal.com.
Heading back to his Jewish roots, the Connecticut Senator offers up his perspective on the festivals, traditions and food of the Jewish heritage in terms of embracing rest and family time together in his new novel, THE GIFT OF REST: REDISCOVERING THE BEAUTY OF THE SABBATH by Sen. Joe Lieberman, with David Klinghoffer. Published by Howard Books /Simon & Schuster, 236 pages.
Your host, Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, comes across as a chatty, good-natured, Old World uncle who’s free with advice, anecdote and sentimental reminiscence. Like most conversations around a religious family’s Sabbath table, the discussion rambles and wanders, with amusing, earthy or insightful asides of sometimes dubious relevance, but it keeps circling back to the book’s main argument: that all Americans, of every outlook or religious perspective, would benefit from a weekly embrace of the idea of a Sabbath.” Of all the times of the year to consider rest and relaxation, the waning summer days that will soon turn into a bustling fall and holiday season remind each of us to find those precious few minutes a day to unwind, refocus and replenish one’s soul and spirit. “The purpose of “the gift of rest” in Mr. Lieberman’s view isn’t “to recharge our batteries so we can work harder but to recharge our souls so we can live better.” Citing a wide variety of Jewish sources both ancient and modern, the senator affirms that work and rest form an indissoluble whole. Six days a week we work to improve our world; on the seventh day, we rest to improve ourselves.” (From the Washington Times review by Michael Medved. Barrymore joins Denise Di Novi and Di Novi Pictures’ Alison Greenspan as producers on the project, which Warners won last year in a multi-studio bidding war for the novel by Ally Carter. Screenwriter Shauna Cross is set to adapt this thrilling novel into a captivating movie. The book follows a young woman named Katarina Bishop who hails from an extended family of cat burglars and master thieves. The girl leaves her illicit life behind, but when her father is the prime suspect in the case of a mobster’s missing art collection, she assembles a crew to track down the art and steal it back. The studio is aging the characters a notch into their early 20s. Barrymore will also supervise the writing. By attaching herself to Society, Barrymore is again working with Cross, who wrote Whip It, Barrymore’s well-regarded female-centric roller derby flick starring Ellen Page and Kristen Wiig, among others. Barrymore, repped by CAA, is signed to helm How to Be Single, a New Line romantic comedy, and the plan is to tackle Society after that. The novel Heist Society is available in bulk now so start your book club on it before the movie hits theaters!
“The Giving Tree is a sweet story about a relationship between a young boy and a tree. The tree always provides the boy with what he wants: branches on which to swing, shade in which to sit, apples to eat, branches with which to build a home. As the boy grows older he requires more and more of the tree. The tree loves the boy very much and gives him anything he asks for. In the ultimate act of self-sacrifice, the tree lets the boy cut it down so the boy can build a boat in which he can sail. The boy leaves the tree, now a stump. Many years later, the boy, now an old man, returns and the tree says, “I have nothing left to give you.” The boy replies, “I do not need much now, just a quiet place to sit and rest.” The tree then says, “Well, an old tree stump is a good place for sitting and resting. Come boy, sit down and rest.” The boy obliged and the tree was very happy.” This book has been used to teach children the value of giving back to those that guide us as we grow. The humility required to see beyond the needs of ourselves. And the beauty of a best friend, no matter what shape that friend may take. The two stars have been cast in the movie adaptation as Peeta Mellark and Gale Hawthorne, respectively. They join Jennifer Lawrence in the movie that is about a future, war-ravaged world run by a corrupt government. The books focus on Everdeen, Mellark and Hawthorne, participants in the Hunger Games Tournament. It’s a televised event in which children battle to the death. Lionsgate hopes to make a film series out of what is an outrageously popular series of books. Hutcherson and Hemsworth are both emerging young stars; Hutcherson has featured in, among other films, “The Bridge to Terabithia,” “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” and his breakout supporting role in “The Kids Are All Right,” and will feature later this year in the remake of the 80′s action film “Red Dawn.” Hemsworth played opposite Miley Cyrus in “The Last Song,” and will feature this year in “The Throwback” and “Arabian Nights.” The story synopsis goes like this: “In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. Each year, the districts are forced by the Capitol to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the Hunger Games, a brutal and terrifying fight to the death – televised for all of Panem to see. Survival is second nature for sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who struggles to feed her mother and younger sister by secretly hunting and gathering beyond the fences of District 12. When Katniss steps in to take the place of her sister in the Hunger Games, she knows it may be her death sentence. If she is to survive, she must weigh survival against humanity and life against love.” Read more on The Huffington Post’s website. Laura Hillenbrand, the best-selling author of “Seabiscuit: An American Legend,” is known for her exuberant storytelling and dynamic characters. Her newest book, “Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption,” is a riveting tale of the life of an athlete and war hero, Louis Zamperini. Every day more than 700 veterans of World War II die, and with each one goes a story, or dozens of them. Laura Hillenbrand reached Louis Zamperini just in the nick of time — he was in his mid-80s when she found him, and 93 now— and it’s an excellent thing, for his is surely one of the most extraordinary war stories of all. As the story goes, the 26-year-old Zamperini went down over the Pacific in late May 1943. Afterwards, he clung to life on a flimsy raft for nearly seven weeks as he waited to die or be saved. After traveling nearly 2,000 miles they ended up in a Japanese prison camp where they were forced to work for the next two years. His story is a testament to the courage and ingenuity of America’s greatest war heroes, and without this captivating book many of these tales would be lost. More amazingly is that throughout the creation of this novel, Hillenbrand suffered with a debilitating disease. Her ability to transport her readers to another time and place is all the more remarkable in light of the fact that she is largely homebound, largely incapacitated by Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, or C.F.S. The illness, a devastating and little understood disorder, is characterized by overwhelming fatigue and various nonspecific symptoms like muscle pain, memory problems, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, achy joints and difficulty getting restful sleep.
